== Emulation within Retroid OS ==

There are no changeable settings for emulators within RetroidOS, and currently there is no way to add new emulation cores. Switch to the Android OS for custom options.

RetroidOS supports the following systems out of the box, with the listed emulator cores for Retroarch:
== Emulation within Android OS ==

The Android OS on the RP2 comes pre-installed with standalone Emulator apps and RetroArch (1.8.4), a single application with the ability to emulate many systems cores.

Also included is a single RetroArch (1.5.0) app, exclusively for the best performing GBA (gpSP) Core.

It is generally not recommended to update emulators, as the Retroid developers chose these builds because they run well on the device. This can be done however if you choose to, as emulators and RetroArch cores get improvements all the time.

Emulation is generally prioritised as a [https://www.retroarch.com/ RetroArch] core first, then a stand alone Emulator second. RetroArch offers internal options across multiple systems, including Online Leaderboards, image filters, and save file paths to allow you to save to a Google Drive or Dropbox for cross-console play.

For help setting up and using RetroArch on the RP2, see [[A Brief Guide to Retroarch]].

The only emulator that does not come standard is DraStic (which is recommended) for Nintendo DS emulation; it can be [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dsemu.drastic&hl=en_US&gl=US purchased from the Google Play Store].

Listed below is a table of standalone emulators & RetroArch Cores for best performance. Systems listed as A are Recommended (usually installed as default) and optimal for the Retroid Pocket 2, although harder to emulate systems may still show issues.

The performance ratings are:
* A: Recommended. Plays with few to no glitches.
* B: Playable. Plays with minor glitches.
* C: OK. Plays some games at full speed, others with issues.
* D: Unplayable. Technically runs games, but with major issues.
* E: Does not run.
==== CONFIGURATION TIPS ====

==== N64 Emulation Tips ====[New]

With over 300 games tested with the universal profile provided by Expertwooden,
Retroid Pocket 2 is now able to play most of the N64 games smoothly without further configurations.
You can find the video tutorial here:
https://youtu.be/nF8Mb9WIF5Q

You will need a specific Mupen64 FZ version:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-4x2B4s-WACd74_HIVvCyQmteuiLIguS/view

==== N64 Core Tips ====[Old]

You can use N64 in your RP2 with RetroArch (so you can use RetroAchievements, for instance). Not every game runs perfect, and many need further tweaking, but overall you should be pleasantly surprised.

This only works with Mupen64Next or NextGLES2 (GLES3 and Parallel simply crash).

Paste the contents of [https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/757645077429616780/758129936334061589/Mupen64Plus-Next.opt Mupen64Plus-Next.opt] to:

* <internal storage>/Android/data/com.retroarch/files/retroarch-core-option.cfg

Or paste the full OPT file here:

* <internal storage>/retroarch/configs/Mupen64Plus-Next/

Please note:

* Use only glide64 for video (angrylion is slow, parallel simply fails).

* All Mupen Cores share the same configs.

===Dreamcast Configuration Tips===

This only applies to beta batch units (Pink, Blue, and Orange). Later units do not include Reicast, and include Flycast pre-installed by itself.

Configuration for the pre-installed Flycast Standalone app is done through the pre-installed Reicast app. Flycast will have better performance than Reicast.

Open Reicast and click on the DC BIOS and format Memory Card 1. For controller settings, set the ports of all to "None", and the port for Android PlayStation to A. Click Map, and map the buttons to their appropriate locations - you may not need to map all buttons. Click Done, then Done again. You may now close Reicast.

Launch Flycast, which shares a config with Reicast, and load and play your game.

If there are issues with the controller, you may need to modify the .cfg file in Flycast. To do this, go into the directory path for Flycast and find the folder named mappings. Inside, there should be a file named Android_Playstation3.cfg. Open the file, scroll to the bottom, and erase the line for deadzone value. This should not be needed if Reicast 20.02b or newer is installed, or if you have used the .cfg file.

A Brief Guide to Retroarch

Yuniyuniyuni: /* Saving Configurations in Retroarch */

== Retroarch on the Retroid Pocket 2 ==

The RP2 comes from the factory with two versions of Retroarch installed. One has a Space Invaders icon, while the other has a GBA icon.

The version with the Space Invaders icon should be a recent version of Retroarch (if not the latest version), preloaded with cores that work well on the RP2. The major exception here is GBA, which is what the second copy of Retroarch is for.

The version with the GBA icon is an older version of Retroarch (v1.5.0) with a single core preloaded: a slightly older version of the gpSP core for GBA emulation. This should run most GBA games with few glitches at full speed on the RP2. Take care not to delete this version of Retroarch, as due to recent events it will be difficult if not impossible to replace.

== Saving Configurations in Retroarch ==

By default, Retroarch does not automatically save any changes to settings. If you make changes and then quit (or crash) Retroarch without saving your configuration, your changes will not carry over to the next time that you run Retroarch.

There are three levels of configuration files in Retroarch: global, core, and game.
You can refer to a tutorial video from here: https://youtu.be/4bYjDpNpCiw

=== Global Configuration ===

The global configuration includes all non-core-specific settings (e.g. standard video, audio, and input settings). You can save your global configuration by going to "Main Menu" (the leftmost menu in the Sony-style "XMB" user interface), selecting "Configuration File", and then "Save Current Configuration". Please note that "Save New Configuration" will create a new configuration file that Retroarch will NOT load automatically; this option is mostly for users who will then work with the file manually, outside of Retroarch.

It is possible to have Retroarch automatically save the global configuration file whenever you quit, by going to "Settings", and activating "Save Configuration on Exit". This is generally not recommended, as it is possible to change settings within Retroarch that will cause it to crash or cease responding to inputs immediately. If the app automatically saves this new configuration, you will have to manually edit the configuration files to get Retroarch working again. It's usually easier just to remember to save manually whenever you want to keep a change to your configuration.

=== Core Overrides and Game Overrides ===

Retroarch can save additional configuration files which will override the global configuration file for particular emulation cores or games. This can be useful when some cores or games work better with different settings than you generally use.

First, make sure that you have a game loaded and running, even if you only want to save a core override. While Retroarch does allow you to load a core without loading a game, this is more of a historical leftover, as most options will not be available unless the core is actually emulating a game.

Once you have changed the settings that you want to modify, you can save an override configuration by going to "Main Menu", selecting "Quick Menu" (this is where you will usually start if you jump back into the menu from a running emulation), then selecting "Overrides". Then select "Save Core Overrides" or "Save Game Overrides" as you wish. There is also a "Save Content Directory Overrides" option, which will save a configuration file to be loaded for every game in the same directory as the currently loaded game. This may be useful if you use the same settings for a large number of games, and organize the directory structure to reflect this.

== Deleting a Core From Retroarch ==

First, load the core that you want to delete. Then from the Main Menu, select "Information", then "Core Information". At the bottom of the list of information, you should find an option to delete the core.

If you do not have an "Information" option in your Main Menu, you will need to activate it, as it is hidden. To activate the "Information" option, go to Settings, then select "User Interface", then "Views". Turn on "Show Information", then go back out to the Main Menu. Through the "Configuration" option, "Save Current Configuration", and quit Retroarch. When you open it again, the "Information" option should be visible in your Main Menu.

=== D-Pad ===

==== My D-pad rattles in its socket ====

Your dpad issue may be due to the motherboard screw next to the dpad being slightly too loose. Tighten one quarter turn.

==== My D-pad is too stiff ====

Your dpad issue may be due to the motherboard screw next to the dpad being slightly too tight. Loosen one quarter turn.

=== Thumbsticks ===

==== Why does my right thumbstick feel sticky? ====
If you own a Blue, Pink, or Orange from the beta batch, most likely your right stick is a little close to the shell, the fix is luckily pretty simple: Pop the cap off and add 2 tiny pieces of paper under joystick for smoother movement.

==== Why does my left thumbstick make a clicking sound? ====
If you own a beta batch unit, your left stick most likely has a notable clicking sound as you move it around, this fix means rolling up your sleeves, opening the shell, and [https://www.reddit.com/r/retroid/comments/iibfud/left_stick_fixteardown_walkthrough/ making a modification].

=== Battery ===

==== Why does my RP2 shut down when the battery still has plenty of power? Why does my RP2 take forever to recharge? ====

Currently (September 2020), software installed on the RP2 at the factory is working with an incorrect battery capacity value. As a result, the power usage estimation algorithms (and therefore the battery meter) are not working properly. They should be taken as a rough estimate at best. Also, the RP2 is currently set to automatically shut down when remaining power capacity reaches 15%. This is fixed to a lower value (7%) in the new firmware (upcoming).

=== Screen ===

==== Why does my RP2 have lightbleed? ====

Some people will notice a little bit of light bleed in the lower left or lower right of their screen. The amount of left side bleed can be influenced by the different RP2 plastic colors.

Light may also show 'green' around the edges when first booting up, this tends to go away within 48 hours.

Lightbleed may also be fixed by pushing down lightly on the screen in all 4 corners, to confirm its seated firmly. To fix these issues, open your RP2 and look for the lower left motherboard screw when open from the rear of the unit, this screw is most likely a bit too tight from the factory. Loosening this screw one half turn will relieve pressure and reduce light-bleed issues.

=== Emulation (Stand-alone) ===
If you can't map the RP2's d-pad to the controller d-pad in Mupen64Plus FZ, make sure that in the Toolbox app the 'Joystick mode toggle' setting is NOT on 'Retroarch' mode. This should fix that issue. See here for more details: [[Getting_Started#Joystick_Mode_Toggle]]. == Pegasus Frontend ==

A full guide can be found [https://basvroegop.nl/pegasus here].

=== Installation ===

- First you need to allow non trusted APK installs. Open Settings, Security and mark "Unknown sources"

- Download the app in https://pegasus-frontend.org/#downloads and install it in your RP2

=== Configuration ===

Pegasus needs to have a file called metadata.pegasus.txt per system to specify which emulator you want to use, this can be a bit tedious but we've got you covered!

You can download config files for the RP2 emulators here: https://github.com/dragoonDorise/pegasus-rp2-metadata/

All the configs are done using the best emulators as described in this wiki, for DS you should install DraStic, all other systems are emulated with the stock emulators.

FYI: We're still working out the kinks to get N64 configured.

Again, please reference the [https://basvroegop.nl/pegasus full guide] for a more complete tutorial on Pegasus with the RP2.

=== Themes ===

You can use several themes, you would need to create a folder in your SD Card called "pegasus_frontend/themes" and put the theme files in a folder for each theme you want to use.

Here are a couple of Pegasus Themes adapted for the Retroid Pocket's Screen:

[SwitchOS RP2 Edition](https://github.com/dragoonDorise/switchOS)

== DIG Frontend ==

=== Installation ===

Download and install from PlayStore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digdroid.alman.dig&hl=en_US.

=== Configuration ===

DIG runs out of the box. Allow prompt to access storage as it will need to scan your media to add ROMS.

- The basic interface is pretty intuitive but very simple with no wallpapers.

- Highly recommended to install different themes like the ones linked below or from the https://digdroid.com/forums/categories/themes DIG Forums.

You can also refer to the tutorial video from here.
https://youtu.be/45MW6vinmpA

=== Themes ===

Copy your desired DIG theme zip file to your device. Do not unzip it as DIG will install themes in zip format.

Themes are installed and selected from within the DIG app in Options tab by clicking on Themes.

- Select "Install theme" and browse the zip file.

- Once installed select the theme from the dropdown menu by clicking "Select theme".

=== Themes ===

You can use several themes, you would need to create a folder in your SD Card called "pegasus_frontend/themes" and put the theme files in a folder for each theme you want to use.

Here are a couple of Pegasus Themes adapted for the Retroid Pocket's Screen:
! scope="row" style="text-align:left;"| Pegasus
| Free. Fast. Immensely and overwhelmingly theme-able (can be skinned to look and behave exactly like any other frontend, given the time and effort). Open-source and actively in development. An absolute pain to configure, and lacks built-in scraping support. Actively being developed (an official Retroid Handhelds launcher is currently being developed with this frontend). Here's a very helpful [https://basvroegop.nl/pegasus guide] to help you set it up. Dev is optimizing it for the RP2. Not available on the Play Store. Download from [https://pegasus-frontend.org/#downloads here].
|-
! scope="row" style="text-align:left;"| Dig
| Free. Slow. Theme-able. Super easy to configure, and does have built-in scraping. Development has been abandoned and the app is closed-source. Consequently, this will never be able to launch certain emulators like Flycast and the GBA build of Retroarch included on RP2. Pre-installed on the RP2. Available on the Play Store [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digdroid.alman.dig&hl=en_US here].
|-
! scope="row" style="text-align:left;"| RESET
| $5. Fast. Not theme-able (yet). Slick and easier than both Pegasus and Dig to configure. Built-in scraping. Actively being developed. Being optimized for the RP2 by the dev, Jav. Available on the Play Store [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retroloungelab.resetcollection&hl=en_US here].
|-
! scope="row" style="text-align:left;"| RetroX
| $12/year. Fast. Theme-able. The easiest to configure. Uses built-in emulator cores, giving you handy universal shortcuts in all of your games. Some systems might be faster in RetroX than on the RP2s pre-installed emulators, while some might be slower (currently). Emulation is less customizable than with other emulators. The subscription covers cloud saves, letting you stay synced across any device you use RetroX on, but its worth noting that internet access is required to open your games. Actively being developed, with a RP2 optimized performance version coming shortly by the dev, Franco Catrin. RetroX offers a 5 day free trial to see if its right for you. Not available on the playstore. Download from [https://RetroX.tv RetroX.TV].
|-
! scope="row" style="text-align:left;"| ClassicBoy
| $4. ClassicBoy is an all-in-one emulator that uses RetroArch cores. It has cores for PlayStation, GB, GBC, GBA, Nintendo 64, NES, SEGA, and NeoGeo. Contains standard features like audio settings, and save states. The developer hasn’t updated the app since 2014. It gives you free access to basic functions. Paying the upgrade fee is needed for it to be objectively usable. Pre-installed on the RP2. Available on the Play Store [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.portableandroid.classicboyLite&hl=en_US here].
